You will be glad to know the education your chiropractor received was very extensive and demanding. The average medical doctor will attend approximately 4,250 hours of education depending on specialty and the average doctor of chiropractic has attended 4,485 hours of education.
|
DID YOU KNOW?
The average education of Chiropractic Doctors is several hundred hours longer than that of Medical Doctors!
|
Chiropractic students undergo thorough teachings in the structure and function of the human body, how disease occurs, and how to prevent, correct and maintain proper health.
Initially, chiropractors must complete - at a minimum - a 2 year undergraduate education, with most chiropractic colleges and Universities requiring a 4 year undergraduate degree in basic science. Emphasis is placed on the core sciences, including organic chemistry, general chemistry, physics, biology, and psychology.
Once undergraduate requirements have been met, a rigorous 4-5 year chiropractic program begins, which is very similar to that of medical school. Course requirements include gross anatomy, physiology, pathology, neurology, radiology, biomechanics, spinal and extremity adjusting techniques, along with a variety of other health sensitive subjects. Chiropractic school focuses on the ability to recognize and treat various soft tissue and structural disorders. Doctors of Chiropractic are also trained in identifying disorders that are beyond their scope of practice and when various outside medical referrals are needed.
During the 4-5 year program, doctors must have completed a number of national board exams required for licensure. Several hundred hours of internship are undergone under the professional supervision of a Doctor of Chiropractic. Many doctors also undergo an externship program to further adapt themselves to actual clinical practice.
After graduation, national board exams I-IV must have been passed, and depending on the individual state, a state board exam may have been given. Once these tasks have been met, a license to practice chiropractic will be granted.
Each state requires continuing education of your chiropractor and the majority of doctors routinely exceed the mandatory CE requirements to ensure a knowledge of latest techniques.

Chiropractic is built on this truth: Health is the body's normal state. Good health is perfectly natural.
The chiropractic profession was founded in 1895 by a man named D. D. Palmer who began to develop a concept that the body has an internal power to heal itself. By choice chiropractors choose not to use drugs or surgery, and utilize natural approaches to allow the body to heal. Chiropractors treat primarily the spine and its attachments to restore function and health. They are facilitators of health and utilize a variety of approaches, including adjustments, physical therapeutic modalities, exercise routines, nutritional recommendations, orthotics and daily living modifications. There are roughly 70,000 doctors of chiropractic who are concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of many disorders of the body. A variety of conditions are treated, ranging from back and neck pain to shoulder, hand or feet disorders. Doctors of chiropractic are fully accredited and licensed in every state and have become well accepted as a complimentary healthcare.
|
The problem with a medical approach to HEALTH is that medicine deals with sickness care, or crisis care, and NOT wellness care or true health care. The side effects of drugs and surgery are the 3rd leading cause of preventable death and the 4th leading cause of death in North America.
Chiropractic treatment neither removes nor adds anything to the body. It stimulates self-healing, the way our bodies were designed to overcome disease and distress.

How Can Chiropractic Help You?
Chiropractic Philosophy differs dramatically from the traditional medical philosophy of health. The medical establishment believes that in a diseased state, drugs can bring a body back to a healthy state. Organs are sometimes removed or transplanted to keep the system 'functioning'. This approach to health is termed an OUTSIDE-IN approach, because external factors such as drugs and surgery are used to treat a condition.
Chiropractic Philosophy, on the other hand, is built on the philosophy that your body’s intelligence system flows via the nervous system to organs, tissue, and every last cell of your body. Since the human body is designed to self-heal and self-regulate, a blockage in the nervous system in the form of subluxation will impair the “signal flow” along the nerves' paths. This causes malfunction in the body, eventually resulting in disease.
The chiropractic approach is to stimulate the body - through adjustments - to correct itself naturally and without the sometimes harmful external influences. This approach to health is termed an INSIDE-OUT approach.
Chiropractic treatment neither removes nor adds anything to the body. It stimulates self-healing, the way our bodies were designed to overcome disease and distress.
If you should have a question that is not answered here, please call or email your question to Dr. Boscher
Is chiropractic care safe?
Absolutely. Compared to other medical treatments, which include medication and surgery, chiropractic is by far the safest. It is estimated that 140000 people in the USA die each year from drug-related reactions and nearly 100.000 people die as result of medical errors. Insurance companies who evaluate the risks of all professions, and charge a premium based on the risk the profession poses. Chiropractors have by far the lowest insurance premium of all medical providers. Even though thousands of chiropractic adjustments are made each year, only a few complaints are registered.
What is an adjustment?
A gentle, carefully placed thrust which moves vertebrae into their proper position. The chiropractor usually delivers the adjustment by hand, but occasionally uses other instruments. The purpose of the adjustment is to correct a spinal subluxation.
What is a subluxation?
Subluxation refers to a spinal bone (vertebrae) that is not in its right position or not moving in its normal range of motion. Misaligned vertebrae are irritating nerves and blood vessels, which in turn affects the way your body communicates with your spine. Subluxations are the cause of many pains and dysfunctions in muscles and organs. The body’s natural ability to heal itself is greatly improved with the subluxation removed.
Does the adjustment hurt?
Most chiropractic adjustments are not only virtually painless, they actually feel great and relieving. In cases of a recent injury, inflamed tissue may react to adjustments and cause some discomfort. Application of ice after treatment may soothe any irritation.
What causes the “cracking” sound during an adjustment?
The sound is no reason to be concerned. The sound is not coming from the bones themselves. It's coming from a lubricant called synovial fluid that's found in every joint. That fluid contains dissolved gases. During the adjustment the joints are slightly separated to move into proper position. This releases the built-up pressure on the fluid and gasses and creates a “pop” similar to the release of pressure when the cork comes off a bottle of Champagne. Not all patients "pop" and not all adjusting techniques produce the noise, which means an adjustment can be proper and effective, even if you do not hear any noise.
Will repeated chiropractic adjustment lead to arthritis?
There is no evidence to suggest that manipulation of the spine or other chiropractic care can lead to arthritis. On the contrary, chiropractors often care for people with arthritis by maintaining joint health. Motion is life when it comes to joint health.
Is it safe to crack my own back or neck?
This question is often posed to chiropractors and concern has been raised over its safety. While people might have the right idea by trying to relieve pressure on the joints, the "cracking" or "popping" of one's back or neck is not the same as a chiropractic adjustment. The problem usually keeps coming back, which should be a clear indication that there has been no real adjustment. The cause of the spinal tension, the fixated or jammed vertebrae, has not been corrected. Even a chiropractor cannot adjust him/herself. You should not try to do it yourself, either.
Is there a minimum or maximum age for a person to receive chiropractic care?
There is no age excluded from chiropractic care. Even babies can have subluxations, due to the rigors of birth. In Denmark, for example, Chiropractic Doctors are part of the birthing team. Children's subluxations should be treated early, as they interfere with nerves that control developing muscles and organs. of the body consist of cartilage growth centers that the bone grows from. Abnormal stresses on a rapidly developing spine and other bones and joints can cause them to develop abnormally. Your chiropractor can detect these problems while they're easy to correct.
Can chiropractors refer patients to other specialists?
Chiropractors are part of a network of health-care professionals. Like other doctors, they will make referrals for patients when necessary. Chiropractors are trained to recognize risk factors and signs of disease that are outside their scope of treatments and they will not hesitate to make a referral when it's in a patient's best interest.
Can chiropractors prescribe medication or perform surgery?
Chiropractors believe in the body’s ability to heal itself and for that reason they don't prescribe medication or perform invasive procedures. They focus on providing your body with the right elements for self-restoration by restoring free-flowing communication between all parts of your body.
Should chiropractic care continue even after I feel fine?
Chiropractors are trained to detect problem areas in your spine before they develop into problem conditions or symptoms. Just because symptoms disappear, does not mean your subluxations are corrected. Regular adjustments help to maintain or support a healthy spine and nervous system. Maintenance or wellness spinal care programs, which may include advice on posture, nutrition and exercise, can effectively prevent pain. However, how you choose to use chiropractic care is ultimately up to you. If your spine wears out, there is no solution. Because your spine directly influences the function of your nervous system, spinal decay permanently damages the nerves and spinal cord. Nearly everyone flosses and brushes their teeth even though their teeth don't hurt. Spinal adjustments are like flossing the spine. Lifetime care of the spine should be a priority!

Any new experience, especially when it comes to your health, can be unnerving. We understand this and we will make every effort to make your first experience very comfortable. Our friendly staff and the doctor will answer any questions and address any concerns you may have. We recommend for your first appointment, you arrive fifteen minutes early to complete the required paperwork. A complete health history is the first step for any new chiropractic patient. We will ask about old injuries, chronic problems, and your current symptoms. What are your sensitive or painful areas? When did the pain start? What caused the pain? In addition, Dr. Boscher might inquire about your family history, dietary habits, job or work habits, and previous treatments for the current condition (chiropractic, osteopathic, medical, etc.). After reviewing the health history, the doctor will discuss his findings with you and determine how your condition could best be treated. If the doctor feels chiropractic will help you, then (and only then) will he recommend a treatment plan - or if conditions allow, discuss a choice of treatment options.

Typical chiropractic adjustments do not hurt. The patient may experience a minor amount of discomfort during the adjustment which lasts only seconds in an effort to correct misalignments and / or "fixations" in the spine that are causing pain or other symptoms and may have been present for years. Any discomfort you may have following your first few adjustments can be compared to the soreness you have after a hard workout at the gym.
